The back of the frame includes detailed family history, indicating that the artist was Ann Hutchinson, granddaughter of the sitter, who completed the portrait when she was seventeen years old.  Hutchinson is also credited as the worker of two important silkwork pictures designed by Samuel Folwell and now in the collection of the Allentown Art Museum, along with a self portrait, painted on canvas c. 1830.  Folwell (1764-1813) was an artist and pattern designer, who, along with his wife Elizabeth, taught needlework in Philadelphia (for a discussion on Folwell and his school, see Betty Ring, Girlhood Embroidery, Vol. II (1993), pp. 378-387).  Facsimile copies of the embroideries, as well as a portrait of Hutchinson, are included in this sale.

 

Provenance: From descendants of Elizabeth Morris Wistar.

Condition

Not examined outside frame.  A few scattered areas of foxing.  The giltwood frame with a few small losses to gilding and gesso.
