Locati LLC is pleased to present our May 2026 sale with over 350 lots. Of special interest is a c. 1820 Declaration of Independence printed on silk, a pair of Oscar Bach bronze torchieres, a cabinet by American carver Stephen Huneck, and fine repousse silver by Samuel Kirk. Additional highlights include a scarce golf-themed Royal Doulton jardiniere and stand, Japanese cloisonne, a variety of American, English, and Continental furniture and decorative arts. Oil on paper laid down to panel, inscribed in ink on verso, "Sabastiano Conca/ Study for altarpiece/ coll. Earl of Leicester" and "Bernice Davidson"

 

Dimensions: 21 in. x 14 in.

 

Provenance: Bernice Davidson (1927-1998), New York; From a local collection.

 

Bernice Davidson was chief curator at the Rhode Island School of Design Museum of Art from 1956-1960.  She was a curator at the Frick from 1965 to 1998, and frequently contributed articles to Art Bulletin, Burlington Magazine, and Master Drawings.  

Sebastiano Conca was born in Naples and apprenticed under Francesco Solimena.  Thomas Coke, 1st Earl of Leicester (1697-1759) commissioned the artist to paint Vision of Aeneas in the Elysian Fields for Holkham Hall, his Palladian-style estate.  

Condition

Later laid down to oak panel.  Old sticker affixed to back inscribed in ink, "Miss Davidson/ Rhode Island/ School of Design."  Losses to edges of panel and paper.  Old repaired tear to paper at bottom left quadrant.
