A diminutive Chippendale carved mahogany slant front desk, third quarter 18th century, the hinged fall with breadboard ends enclosing a an interior fitted with pigeon holes and small drawers, above one long over two short drawers with shaped apron below, centered by a stylized scallop shell flanked by fluted quarter columns, raised on cabriole legs with shell carved knees, terminating in ball-and-claw feet. Height 39 1/2in; width 31 1/2in; depth 18 1/2in.From a New Jersey Estate.
Condition
Structurally sound. In an overall restored condition. The brass hardware has been replaced and in a second set of holes to drawer fronts. Scarring and ghost marks from earlier hardware. Shrinkage and horizontal age cracks to sides of case. The front left leg with an old break and repair to the knee. All four legs have been ended out with very old spliced repairs approximately 5-6" up from bottom of foot. The repairs are probably using period feet from another piece of furniture. Typical dings, dents, scuffs and surface scratches throughout. No keys.
