A George II Inlaid Mahogany Tall Case Clock, Thomas Kefford, Royston (fl. 1710-1750), Third Quarter 18th Century. 

The twelve-inch square brass dial with rolling moon phase to the lunette, having Roman hours and Arabic minutes, two arbors, subsidiary seconds dial, date aperture and engraved label 'Thos: Kefford Royston' to the matte center, all within cast spandrels. The eight-day twin train movement, with anchor escapement, striking on a bell, having five knopped pillars between plates.

The broken arch hood with brass finials on fluted plinths above a swans neck ending in applied carved roundel terminals, the dial door flanked by free-standing stop-fluted colonnettes with brass capitals and bases, the cove molding above the waist with stop-fluted quarter columns having brass capitals and bases, flanking an inlaid arched crest door, above a cove molding, the conforming box base all supported by bracket feet.

Dimensions: Height 90 1/4in; width 19 1/4in; depth 10 1/4in.

Provenance: Purchased with 'Antique and Unusual Clocks', Folkestone, England, 1959. (accompanied by the original bill of sale)

Footnote: Mary G. Roebling (New Jersey, 1905-1994) was the first woman to serve as the head of a major commercial bank in the United States when she became president of the Trenton Trust in 1937.

Condition

Retaining an older surface. In an overall restored condition. Minor old glued repairs and small losses throughout. General marks, wear, abrasions, surface scratches, small losses. The dial toning, wear, craquelure and losses to numerals and moon phase. The dial and case are likely together by association. There is rebuilding to the cheeks of the clock case where the saddle board sits. The glass dial door appears to be replaced. With two weights, pendulum, winding crank and case key. We cannot guarantee the completeness and functionality of the clock's movement.
