An American Girlhood Silk on Linen Pictorial Needlework House Sampler, Early 19th Century. Unfinished and unframed. Together with an American broderie perse chintz applique panel, first half 19th century.
Dimensions: Dimensions of needlework approximately 20 x 17 1/2in; Dimensions of broderie perse approximately 19 x 14in.
Provenance: Property from the Collection of C. Thomas Attix Jr., East Windsor, New Jersey.
Footnote: Broderie Perse is French for "Persian Embroidery", a technique where fabric such as birds and flowers are cut-out and appliqued onto another fabric to create a design. This technique was traditionally worked in Chintz fabrics and gained its height of popularity in the United states in the late 18th-early 19th century and earlier in Europe during the 17th century. Broderie Perse likely made its way from India where much of the chintz fabric was printed.
Condition
Wear commensurate with age and use. In overall good condition, minor discolorations.
