Dimensions: 8 5/8 in. x 12 in. (sight); 12 3/4 in. x 16 7/8 in. (framed)

 

Provenance: Descended in the family of the artist; from a local collection.

 

Gaertner was born in Berlin, Germany in 1845 and studied at the Royal Academy of Fine Art (Berlin) and later, in Paris.  He spent a year traveling throughout Japan, which would have a profound influence on his work.  Gaertner moved to the United States in 1871, eventually settling in New York City, where he was employed with the well-known decorator firm of R. Loforte.  He was a successful mural painter, who worked on the interiors of parts of the White House under Teddy Roosevelt; the Roosevelt home on Oyster Bay, Long Island; "Elmendorf" in Lexington, Kentucky; "Lyndhurst" in Tarrytown, New York; among others.  

Condition

Not examined outside frame.  Some toning and yellowing to mat.  A few scattered spots, particularly to upper third of paper.
