A Pennsylvania wool on linen girlhood needlework alphabet sampler, Carlisle School No. 7, wrought by Maria Robinson, dated 1856, having two rows of uppercase alphabets above a central floral medallion inscribed, "Maria Robinson / School No 7 / Carlisle / 1856", with a cat dog to each of the lower corners, all bordered by floral and vine motifs. Framed and glazed in a period figured walnut veneered frame. Footnote: A related example in the collection of the Smithsonian; Nation Museum of American History, Behring Center. There are samplers in existence from School No. 7 and School No. 8. It is thought this work was done under the tutelage of Miss Fanny Webber, who taught from 1836 to 1863. Framed and glazed. Not examined out of frame. Minor staining, discoloration and small losses to linen at upper left corner. Scattered minor wear to wool. The walnut frame with minor movement to veneers and general fading.
