A Pennsylvania wool on linen girlhood needlework alphabet sampler, Carlisle School No. 7, wrought by Maria Robinson, dated 1856, having two rows of uppercase alphabets above a central floral medallion inscribed, "Maria Robinson / School No 7 / Carlisle / 1856", with a cat dog to each of the lower corners, all bordered by floral and vine motifs. Framed and glazed in a period figured walnut veneered frame. Footnote: A related example in the collection of the Smithsonian; Nation Museum of American History, Behring Center. There are samplers in existence from School No. 7 and School No. 8. It is thought this work was done under the tutelage of Miss Fanny Webber, who taught from 1836 to 1863.
