John Stephen Benezet was born Jean-Etienne Benezet in St. Quentin, France, in 1683.  The family was one of the wealthiest in the area, but their estates were confiscated after the Edict of Nantes in 1715.  Together with his wife and twelve children, Benezet settled in Pennsylvania in 1731.  His son Anthony (1713-1784) became a prominent Quaker abolitionist and teacher in Philadelphia, and founded one of the earliest anti-slavery societies, the Society for the Relief of Free Negroes Unlawfully Held in Bondage.  John Stephen died in Philadelphia in 1751.

Condition

The frame retains an old partial paper label for James S. Earle and Son, Chestnut Street, Philadelphia.  The canvas with patched repair at sitter's right shoulder.  Under UV light, inpainting and repairs to spot at top of sitter's head, near forehead, and one at chest.  Other areas of inpainting near frame at top right corner.  The giltwood frame with expected nicks, marks, and scratches.
