A Delaware Valley Chippendale Carved Walnut Three-Shell Side Chair, Third Quarter 18th Century. The Cupid's bow crest rail with scrolled ears, centered by a scallop shell, above a solid splat flanked by tapering incised stiles and trapezoidal slip seat, the front rail with central drop pendant, raised on cabriole front legs with shell carved knees, terminating in claw-and-ball feet, the side rails having through tenons and pinned into the raked back legs with stump feet. The front seat rails stamped 'III'.

Provenance: Property from a Bucks County, Pennsylvania Estate.

Structurally sound. Each in an overall good condition. The shell carved chair with an old break and glued repair to the mortise and tenon joint that hold the splat into the crest rail. The upholstery is in good condition overall. Retaining its original slip-seat frame and glue blocks. The left carved knee return with a small loss. General marks, wear, nicks, abrasions, surface scratches and small losses throughout. 

The other side chair with plugged holes to the front of each stile. re-pinning to the side rails. General marks, wear, abrasions and small losses. The upholstered slip seat with wear and tears.
