Two Pieces of Philadelphia Coin Silver for Dr. George Craig Heberton (1822-1880), c. 1852-1853

 

Comprising: a repousse footed cup, marked on the underside for Bailey & Co., and engraved "Craig Heberton/ August 30th 1852."; and a hinged cigar box marked on the underside for R. & W. Wilson, and engraved on lid, "Elijah Van Suckel,/ To his Son/ G. Craig Heberton/ M.D./ January 1st, 1853."

 

Dimensions: 3 3/4 in. diameter, 5 1/4 in. high (the cup); 5 3/4 in. wide, 3 3/4 in. deep, 1 1/2 in. high (the box)     22.69 ozt

 

Dr. George Craig Heberton was born in Philadelphia in 1822.  According to his death notice published in The Philadelphia Inquirer, he "graduated from the University of Pennsylvania in 1845, but, being a gentleman of fortune, never engaged in the practice of his profession. He was a member of the Philadelphia Club, and moved in what is called, par excellence society."  He married Sarah Van Syckel (1830-1897) and they had three sons.  

 

Provenance: From descendants of Elizabeth Morris Wistar.

Condition

In good overall condition with some expected tarnishing and wear.
