An American Girlhood Silk on Linen Needlework Alphabet and Pictorial House Sampler, Wrought by Sally Frothingham, Initialed 'SKF' and dated 1804. Probably New England. Inscribed to the upper corners ''Sally Frothingham's Work Wrought In the Eighth / year Of Her Age / Excuse the / Bad work / 1803' With six rows of script, lowercase and uppercase alphabets and numbers, eight rows of text and a Georgian house below. Inscribed 'How Fair Is The Rose What a Beautiful Flower / The Glory Of April And May But The Leaves / Are Beginning To Fade In An Hour And They / Wither And Die In a Day / Then Ill Not Be Proud Of My youth Or My / Beauty sence Both Of Them Wither And Fade But Gain a Good Name By Well Doing My Duty / This Will Scent Like The Rose When I Am Dead'.
Dimensions: Sight 19 1/2 x 12 1/4in; frame 22 1/4 x 15 1/4in.
Condition
Not examined out of the frame. General fading overall. The linen with scattered discoloration and stains throughout and small losses. Framed and glazed. 19th Century gilt frame with typical nicks and scuffs, otherwise good condition.
