Depicting a stone cottage with a view of the Hudson Valley beyond.  Oil on canvas; inscribed, signed and dated "To Mrs. Dellenbaugh/ Carroll Brown/ 1916" lower right.

 

Dimensions: 21 in. x 19 1/8 in.; 27 3/4 in. x 26 in. (framed)

 

Harriet Roger Otis Dellenbaugh (1855-1930) and her husband, artist and explorer Frederick Dellenbaugh (1853-1935), were two of the founding members of the Cragsmoor art colony, located in the Hudson Valley of New York.  Gardening was a popular and highly competitive past-time among the summer residents, and flowers were often the focal points of paintings.

Condition

The canvas unlined, on the original stretcher and likely in the original frame.  One repaired 1 1/2 in. tear approximately 2 in down from center top.  The strainer with two old labels numbered in ink.  Under UV light: scattered areas of inpainting in sky and to section of grass approximately 3 in. from bottom.  The frame with minor losses to carving, gilding and gesso.
