About the Artist:
David Hymes is a multidisciplinary artist and designer with over 30 years of experience in fine woodworking, sculpture, and architectural design. With a foundation in architecture from the University of Maryland, Hymes brings a unique fusion of structural intelligence and artistic sensitivity to his work. His practice spans custom furniture, functional sculpture, cabinetry, and bespoke interior elements-each piece a meticulous balance of aesthetic form and purposeful function.
David's approach is intuitive and deeply collaborative, working closely with clients to craft designs that are not only visually compelling but personally meaningful. He specializes in transforming raw materials- especially unique wood slabs-into one-of-a-kind creations that blur the line between art and furniture. His signature technique involves assembling "a kit of parts" from solid wood and multi-ply materials, which are then sculpted into harmonious compositions. Finishes are carefully chosen to enhance the natural beauty of the wood, with occasional accents of color to amplify form and character.
Influenced by the architectural works of Frank Lloyd Wright, Gerrit Rietveld, and Richard Meier, as well as renowned furniture craftsmen like Sam Maloof, Wendell Castle, and George Nakashima, Hymes has developed a distinct aesthetic rooted in contemporary craft, material
honesty, and spatial harmony.
David's work has been exhibited in galleries across the United States, including Sturgeon Bay (Wisconsin), Cleveland (Ohio), Pennsylvania, Virginia, Baltimore, and Monkton (Maryland). His designs have been featured in multiple issues of DC Design and Home magazines, and he continues to collaborate with renovation firms, fine arts service companies, and estate management clients in the Mid-Atlantic region.
Each creation by David Hymes stands as a lyrical, functional testament to craftsmanship, material integrity, and the enduring beauty of thoughtful design.
