A Maryland Chippendale Inlaid Mahogany Slant Front Desk, William Hornby, Baltimore, Circa 1800.

The hinged thumb molded fall with mitered corners, centered by a fan paterae, enclosing an interior fitted with a central prospect door enclosing an open aperture and small drawer, flanked by four valanced pigeon holes over three small drawers to either side, all above four graduated, cockbeaded and string inlaid drawers over a molded base, raised on ogee bracket feet.

With pencil signature to the drawer bottom behind prospect door, inscribed, "William Hornby".

Dimensions: Height 42 1/4in; width 41 1/2in; depth 22in.

Provenance: Property from a Philadelphia Main Line Collection.

Condition

Structurally sound. General marks, wear, nicks, abrasions and surface scratches overall. Scattered small losses to inlay and restorations. The brass hardware is mostly replaced. Brass hinges are replaced. Some pulls to small drawers and lopers are lacking. Scattered small patches throughout. No key.
